Older Persons Team

Our 55 plus accommodation allows people over the age of 55 to continue to live independently, in a safe and secure environment.

At our Sheltered and Extra Care Schemes, residents can enjoy the comfort of living in their own home with the peace of mind that there is support available if they need it.

Meet the Team

We have a dedicated Older Persons Team here at Melin who are there to support you . They work alongside our Scheme Managers, and are here to help with any questions you may have about your home or your current needs.

What's going on at our Schemes?

Tredegar Court gets festive

Residents at Tredegar Court, Newport, were given a helping hand to get into the festive spirit recently thanks to a group of volunteers from Solas. The Volunteers are taking part in an Engagement Gateway Programme with Solas, which is part of Charter Housing, and they asked if they could help put up the Christmas decorations at our Sheltered Scheme in Newport. As you can see the results were great and the residents really appreciated it.

St Mary's Court IT training and after school clubs

Residents at St Mary’s Court, Newport, have had IT training with Dr Ann Smith from University of Wales, through the Stow Hill Computer Project.

Staff from the Sheltered Scheme have also been working with St Woolos school, helping out with their after school clubs and Christmas Bazaar.

Llys Ebwy residents help Children in Need

Staff and residents at Llys Ebwy Sheltered Scheme in Ebbw Vale have been busy raising money for Children in Need this week. Scheme Manager Karen has been baking pies and ice slices to sell and organised a raffle and bingo for which residents kindly donated the prizes, all in aid of a great cause. They successfully raised £200 through their efforts which is a pretty impressive total.

Victoria Court helps Ty Hafan

Residents at Victoria Court Sheltered Scheme in Abergavenny have adopted Ty Hafan as their sole charity four years ago. This was because they felt they had had long healthy happy lives, something which is denied to many of the children there. Ty Hafan’s symbol is a butterfly which has a short beautiful life, and the residents wanted to do something to help out. This year they have donated an astounding £415 to this very worthwhile charity.

Join the fun in Usk

Our Scheme Manager Deborah Towhigg has started a Prize Bingo session at the Old School (Youth Centre) in Usk on Tuesday evening from 7.30pm till 9pm. We already have a great crowd who come along since it began in August, but we would love to see some new faces. Come along and join the fun!

Howell Griffiths residents get Big Lottery funding

Lucky residents at Howell Griffiths Court, Abertillery, have received a £3,700 grant from the Big Lottery Fund ‘Awards for All’ project. The fund helps to improve local communities and support activities such as voluntary events and self help projects. Howell Griffiths residents will use the cash boost to fund IT classes, museum visits and music sessions.
Scheme manager Angela Jessop said that, ‘Our residents are overwhelmed at the amount of money they have received and it will be a real benefit to them. We are looking forward to planning various activities over the next 12 months.’

Out and About with Aneurin Bevan Court

Residents at Aneurin Bevan Court, Pontypool, have enjoyed a summer of days out and short breaks, with free coach travel thanks to lottery funding. Trips have included including holidays to Torquay and Liverpool, and visits to Weston-super-Mare to enjoy the sunshine.

Resident Phil Smith organised the trips, and has successfully applied to the Lottery for several years. He has received over £35,000 to fund projects such as this for the Sheltered Scheme.

In August they took a trip to the Worcester Flower Festival, enjoyed a day around the Abby and soaked up the sun by the river. More visits are planned for 2012.
