We have put reducing our carbon footprint at the heart of anything we do, with a team dedicated to reducing our environmental impact – green is the way forward for us.

We have been working on a three-year plan to decarbonise our fleet of 60 vehicles, with Newport based company Mon Motors and we are expecting the first delivery of fully electric vehicles this June.

Working with local contactor High Cross Electrical (pictured) we have installed 15 electric charging points at our head offices, which will be used to charge the new fleet and staff can use the points for their own cars at cost.

We have recently secured a renewable energy deal, for our offices and Independent Living Schemes, coupled with the solar panels at our head office making a big difference in our organisations environmental impact.

Trish Hoddinott, Manager of the Sustainability Team at said: “It’s all the little steps that we are taking, which will make a big difference.

"We have also been working on our plans to decarbonize our existing housing stock; starting decarbonisation surveys, installation of Intelligent energy systems and undertaking a number other energy efficiency works on 92 of our properties – through the Welsh Government Optimised Retrofit Programme. This is a main focus for us for our new build developments as well, and our partners at other housing associations.”

We have also been involved in the first Climate Change Assembly in partnership with other housing associations; United Welsh, Linc Cymru, Melin Homes and Tai Calon along with sustainable development charity Cynnal Cymru, Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council and ERS Cymru.

Partnership working is high priority for us who been also been supporting local charity Stump Up for Trees as part of the organisations monthly ‘diolch’ initiative for staff to thank others who have gone over and above.

Paula Kennedy, CEO of Melin said: “We are passionate about collaborative working, it brings about more change and if this sees us and other organisations reduce our carbon footprint that is just one of many benefits. We have exciting plans for decarbonisation for the future, so watch this space.”
