Employment success stories

Following on from our heartwarming story about Hafizullah Ashartee’s journey into work, we wanted to take a closer look at some of our other employment success stories from the last year. Throughout the month of July we want to showcase the Melin residents who have worked with the Employment Team and how they made a positive change in their careers. Here is the first installment...

Daniel Fish and Paula Harris

Our dedicated Employment Team work with Melin residents from all kinds of different backgrounds. Each year they help dozens of our residents into new careers and help them with the training and skills they need to be successful. Not only does this improve their finances, but it also has a remarkable impact on their self-confidence and self-esteem.

Daniel Fish

From: Torfaen

Background: Daniel was looking for work, but couldn’t drive which limited his opportunities.

How we helped: We helped Daniel to search for vacancies and we provided him with shopping vouchers so he could purchase clothes for his job interview. We made a commitment with Daniel that if he could secure a job and hold it for six months, then we would assist with the cost of driving lessons.

Where are they now: Daniel secured a role as an operative with Eurofoods, working full time. He enjoys his new role and has aspirations of becoming a manager with the company.

The support I have received from Melin Homes has been unbelievable, Dafydd was great in helping me look and apply for vacancies, I have successfully started employment and am now looking towards a brighter future. Thank you Dafydd for the help I couldn’t have done it without you.

Where are they now: Paula enjoyed a successful spell employed with Liberty Care where she was very proactive in undertaking several training courses to help her with her career.

Nico Shaw

From: Torfaen

Background: Nico needed some support for him and his family after being made redundant during the Coronavirus pandemic.

How we helped: We helped Nico with food and shopping vouchers to support his family whilst he trained. We also worked with him on his CV and helped him to search for employment.

Where are they now: Nico earned a role with a local building firm and is working on a self-employed basis while training to become a HGV driver.

Since I was made redundant my family and I have been struggling mentally and financially. Thankfully, due to the support of Melin homes a lot of my stress and worries were eased. From week-to-week updates with finding a job, to providing vouchers for food, and also workplace PPE, they helped massively.

Asking for help is not easy and I can honestly say Melin couldn’t do enough to help us get through this difficult time. I have learned that you should never be afraid or ashamed to ask for help as everyone need help sometimes.
