Mel's bees

A while back we did our bit to boost the bee population of Torfaen by donating £1200 to community enterprise Mel’s Bees. The Torfaen based group is supported by the council and is now able to develop their site and build new hives.

They have used the money we sent to move over 1200 tonnes of soil and rubbish, left behind from over 30 yrs of the land not being used. Also with our help, the group has gone from having two hives to having 27, which allows them to produce commercial grade honey.

Mel’s Bees is now looking for more volunteers who are eager to learn more about apiculture (bee keeping.) Volunteers will help with painting, woodwork and landscaping. The group is now pursuing first aid training including COSHH and training on how to use epi pens in case of someone suffering an allergic reaction to bee stings.

Keep buzzing Mel’s and you can follow them on Facebook to find out how to volunteer.
