celebrations of our 10th birthday
Melin Homes celebrated turning 10 with a business breakfast event at Rodney Parade, Newport this week. Over 60 partner organisations and stakeholders attended the event to mark the 10th anniversary of the Pontypool-based housing association’s formation. Melin came into existence in April 2007 after a merger between the then Eastern Valley Homes and Gwerin.

Deputy Chief Executive Peter Crockett opened the event by highlighting the huge changes to the organisation and the communities it has homes in. Guest speaker at the event was Sophie Howe, Future Generations Commissioner for Wales. Ms. Howe congratulated Melin on being the first housing association to sign up to the code of Practice for Ethical Employment in supply chains, which means Melin are a living wage employer and have an expectation that suppliers are also.

Ms Howe said: “Melin is a crucial part of the vision of the Well Being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 through empowering people to live the best lives they can.”

Melin CEO Paula Kennedy said at the event; “Our partners and stakeholders have played a huge role in how we have grown and progressed as an organisation in the last ten years and have a vital role to play going forward. This event was a great chance to hear about the Commissioner’s work in this area and also say a big thank you to the partners who make a real difference to our work.”

Stakeholders also signed up to Melin’s ‘Vol10’ volunteering initiative, which has a target of 10,000 hours of volunteering being pledged. After yesterday’s event the total amount of volunteering hours so far pledged has reached nearly 4,000 hours.
