Asbestos

What is asbestos

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibre that was widely used in construction and other industries until the late 1990s.

It is a legal requirement for us to inform you that a small number of our homes contain asbestos. This should not concern you as it is perfectly safe to live in a home with asbestos if it’s not disturbed.

Making alterations to your home

When we make alterations or complete repairs in your home, we have access to the asbestos records. We will take the necessary precautions that ensure you and our staff are kept safe.

Your Occupation Contract makes it clear that failure to tell us of any work you are doing to your home will leave you responsible for the cost of the work. You could also be charged to undo the work you have carried out without our knowledge and permission.

If you are planning on making any alterations, please contact us before you start any work. We ask that you do this because you could accidentally disturb asbestos material, which would otherwise be safe.

Decorating your home

If you are planning on decorating your home, it is best to contact us and ask for advice as we will be able to tell you if your plans, in the unlikely event, may disturb any asbestos in your home.

What to do if material containing asbestos is damaged

Please get in touch with our Customer Contact Team on 01495 745910.

Please do not attempt to repair or sweep up any debris yourself. The use of a domestic vacuum cleaner or sweeping brush could lift asbestos fibres into the air.

Asbestos-containing materials that are undamaged and in good condition are not dangerous and are completely safe.
